Saracen's Head

The Saracen's Head hotel, Dunstable's oldest surviving inn, in High Street South. Parts of the building date back to the 16th century. Most of the old building was destroyed in a fire in 1815. When it was being rebuilt a buried hoard of coins was discovered dating back to the years of the Civil War The landlord at the time had been a Roundhead and perhaps he had hidden his savings when the town was raided by supporters of the King. The Cavaliers had, famously, fired shots at the congregation in the Priory Church and bullet holes can still be seen in the church door.
